WHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD KNOW

More context before you decide.

Clinical research is structured around a protocol, eligibility criteria, informed consent, and ongoing safety oversight. Understanding those pieces can make conversations with a study team more useful and help you decide whether participation fits your circumstances.

Why studies are conducted

Research studies may evaluate investigational medicines, devices, procedures, behavioral approaches, or new uses of existing care. Each study has a defined purpose and a written plan describing who may participate and what will happen.

Screening & eligibility

Eligibility can depend on age, medical history, current medications, prior treatments, laboratory results, or other study-specific factors. Expressing interest is only a first step and does not guarantee enrollment.

Visits & procedures

Participation may involve clinic visits, questionnaires, physical exams, blood draws, imaging, medication schedules, remote check-ins, or other activities. Ask what is required and how much time participation may take.

Risks & possible benefits

The study team should explain known and reasonably foreseeable risks, potential benefits, available alternatives, and what is still uncertain. No research study can promise a personal medical benefit.

Informed consent

Before joining, prospective participants generally receive an informed consent document describing the study. Take time to read it, ask questions, and discuss the decision with people you trust or a healthcare professional.

Your choice remains yours

Participation is voluntary. Choosing not to participate should not prevent you from asking about other care options, and participants can generally choose to leave a study after enrollment.

QUESTIONS TO BRING WITH YOU

A good research conversation is a two-way conversation.
